Tutti titoli che inneggiano alla lotta, alla resistenza, in un mondo sempre più classista e razzista.
C’è tanto Bob Marley nella sua musica, ma anche tanto blues, soul, rock, funk, Led Zeppelin e Marvin Gaye.
“I don’t know anybody who can jam with Johnny Lee Hooker, sit down with the Wailers and suddenly dig into heavy metal”, diceva di lui J.P.Plunier, suo long time producer.
Ben Harper non è catalogabile perché è musicalmente onnivoro e sfugge a qualsiasi etichetta: “I don’t want to be a protest singer, I don’t want to be a crooner, I don’t want to be a rocker, I don’t want to be any of these”.
Live from Mars, Diamonds on the Inside, There Will be a Light, Both Sides of the Gun, White Lies for Dark Times, Give Till it’s Gone.
Non c’è album che non ho comprato in questi anni. Alcuni sono straordinari, altri un po’ meno. Specie da quando ad accompagnarlo non ci sono più gli Innocent Criminals.
Ma la fede non si discute e viene sempre ripagata.
È appena uscito il suo ultimo capolavoro, Get Up !, dieci canzoni con Charlie Musselwhite, per intenderci uno che suonava a Chicago con Muddy Waters.
La title track è già un classico: “Don’t tell me I can’t break the law, cause the law has broken me”.
